The Materials Science and Applications Groups (MSAG) laboratory at Fisk University is a unique facility dedicated to the research and development of new and innovative radiation detector technologies. A variety of crystals and detectors are investigated and fabricated, which include compact gamma ray spectrometers and low-power neutron detectors. Applications include (1) pixelated devices for gamma ray imaging for biomedical applications and (2) detector integration in the assembly of CubeSats for chemical composition of planetary and asteroid surfaces that provide clues about their origins and evolution. As a result, the MSAG Laboratory serves as a center for undergraduate and graduate student education as well as a facility to accommodate funded research projects from various government and industrial sponsors.
